Miami Tilefish

Miami Tilefish

Miami is one of the hottest places to fish in the world. Fishing in Miami for tilefish is an exceptional experience for fishermen.  One does not have to go very far out to sea.  In certain parts like the northeast there are vast populations of Golden tiles. Miami tilefish can be caught up to three miles off shore. If one were looking for Miami tilefish, one would at least have to go approximately five hundred feet in depth, which is the minimum.

Actually there are two subfamilies of the tilefish that come in the category as tilefish or blanquillo. Both of these are different in form and structure.  One type belongs to Branchiosteginae family, which has a deep body large head and large mouth. The other type belongs to the Malacanthinae, which have slender and extended bodies with terminal mouths.  The Malacanthinae tilefish are well known in tropical waters.

The tilefish is usually found near sandy areas around coral reefs. The tilefish seek shelter in self-made burrows made out of gravelly or sandy grounds, sometimes in edges of steep slopes. The type of home they make all depend on kind of species they are.

When fishing for Miami tilefish normal reels are not used, since the depth of the water is more, the fishermen choose to use electric reels.  The best bait to use for this fish type is cut bait that is fresh. For Miami tilefish using fresh bait is vital, because these fish rely on the power of smell.  Since it is dark in their world, the power of scent is what they use.

The tilefish eat smaller vertebrae, like crab, shrimp or sea urchins; they also like worms, small fish, and mollusks.  No matter, what is the size of the tilefish; these species have very sharp eyesight.  This particular trait comes in handy when catching their prey.  Some Miami tilefish even have the trait that is known as chameleon sand tilefish where they can camouflage their body color to avoid their enemies.

When Miami fishing one will see various sizes of tilefish, the size can range from eleven to one hundred and twenty-five centimeters. Miami tilefish are aggressive hunters, with large eyes and good size teeth.

The boats used to catch tilefish are a little different.  The bottom of the boat should be a muddy clay bottom.  In locating a right boat, soft bottom is also significant.

Currently not much is known about Miami tilefish’s reproductive habits.  More research and studies need to further take place.  For the research that is done, it shows that hatching takes place during the entire spring and summer.  It is not in the nature of parent tilefish to guard the eggs.

The best time to go tilefish fishing is during the daytime hours. So it is time to pack a bag with some drinks, food and head for some Miami tilefish fishing.
